The first press we owned was designed
by George Phineas Gordon and was
called a Gordon jobber. It was a cast
iron platen press built in 1860 and we
taught ourselves to handset type and
print letterpress cards, bookplates and
holiday cards for friends. Phineas
is also the main character in John
Knowles' A Separate Peace, a novel
we were reading at the time we were
starting our press.
